Transport
For ARF dogs, the transport process begins a few weeks before they actually load up and depart San Antonio.
All ARF dogs must successfully pass a behavioral assessment using the SAFER method. Then they undergo a medical examination, which includes being tested for heartworms. ARF dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated before the trip. Photos and information on all dogs are given to the receiving shelters for approval.
Once they are selected for transport, ARF dogs are transferred from the shelter to foster homes in San Antonio, where they stay for two to three weeks before departure. This way, we get to know the dogs in a home environment and it allows us to provide the receiving shelter, and potential adopters, with as much information about the dog as possible. Being in a foster home prior to transport also helps keep the dogs healthy.
Each dog receives a Certificate of Health which certifies that they are approved for interstate travel. Dogs are transported in individual crates in a cargo van, where they receive plenty of food, water, and regular bathroom and exercise breaks. ARF follows the USDA guidelines for transporting companion animals.
